Icebreaker Conversation Starters:
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • What is the best story (or book) you have ever read?
  • If you had three wishes, what would they be?
  •  What subject is your favorite?  Your least favorite? Why?
Body Language and Behavior Guide​
  • Listen, and use good eye contact
  • Ask questions
  • Praise and encourage your student
Useful Tips & Tricks
  • Take time to chat before starting work
  • Ask about homework
  • Discuss plan for how you will spend your hour together
  • Be sure to get your student’s input
  • If applicable, reach out for the parents' input
  • Propose structured, reasonable assignments
  • Focus on problem subjects
  • Remain calm and positive; motivate your student
  • Reward students with a learning game/activity when they succeed
  • Update parents with weekly/monthly progress reports
